Abstract Scope |
Developing next-generation satellite materials that remain stable under the extreme temperature variations of space environments is essential. These materials should exhibit low thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, and high specific strength. However, enhancing one of these properties often results in trade-offs that degrade others. To simultaneously improve these properties, multi-core structured metal composite rod with maximized anisotropy were fabricated and evaluated. Aluminum powder and carbon fiber composites were chosen as core materials for their low thermal expansion and high thermal conductivity, while a Mg-Zn alloy was selected as the shell material for its high specific strength. The cores were manufactured using a copper tube drawing process, followed by a two-step extrusion process to produce the multi-composite core rod. The resulting rod demonstrated excellent low thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, and high specific strength.
