Abstract Scope |
Magnesium alloys with added lithium are valued for their low density (1.4-1.6 g/cm³), making them suitable for electronics, aerospace, and defense. Lithium addition lowers the critical shear stress and c/a ratio of magnesium crystals, enhancing low-temperature formability. Mg-Li alloys' crystal structures vary with lithium content: a Mg-Li solid solution in a BCC structure (β-Li) above 10.3 wt.% lithium, and a dual α-Mg+β-Li structure at 5.7-10.3 wt.% lithium. However, embrittlement and mechanical property deterioration due to β-Li crystallization coarsening is a concern.
This study investigates Mg-9.5Li-0.5Zn alloys with varying Al content (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 wt.%) and heat treatment. Specimens were gravity cast in an SF6+CO2 atmosphere and extruded at 250°C into 4 mm thick, 50 mm wide plates. Microstructure and phase analyses were conducted using optical microscopy, SEM, and X-ray diffraction, while tensile tests at room temperature assessed mechanical properties.
