Abstract Scope |
Consolidation of magnesium (Mg) and Mg alloy powders to full density by conventional press and sinter (P + S) processing is challenging due to the presence of surface oxide layers on powder particles impeding solid and liquid state sintering. Results are presented here of spark plasma sintering (SPS) application towards full density processing of pure Mg and Mg alloy powders. Current understanding of SPS implies that high current arcs produced between powder particles disrupts the powder particle surface oxide layers and allows for solid state sintering. SPS processed Mg and Mg alloy powder compacts are directly compared to P + S processed powder compacts with specific attention to the densities achieved. Additionally, all consolidated powder compacts were characterized for microstructure, phase development, and microstructure composition in addition to density. Results of this work are intended to increase the understanding of consolidation of Mg/Mg alloy powders. |
