Abstract Scope |
The main objective of this work is to study the feasibility of manufacturing extruded magnesium ECO-alloy products for applications in different industries such as aeronautics, automotive or biomedical, from recycled chips, in order to contribute to the implementation of a circular economy model. The key concept is to avoid the melting of the chips by following an alternative procedure that allows chips to be processed in solid state. For this purpose, the chips from ECO-Mg alloys were selected, cleaned and cold compacted. The obtained compacts are then consolidated in the form of bars, profiles and tubes using two different techniques: hot extrusion and friction extrusion involving severe plastic deformation and friction heating. A detailed microstructural and mechanical characterisation of the products obtained have been carried out in order to compare their properties with those of the same products obtained using primary magnesium alloys. |
