Abstract Scope |
In commercial structural materials such as Fe, Al and Ti, a higher r-value indicates higher formability. However, Magnesium alloys, with their limited slip systems during deformation, typically develop a strong basal texture after thermo-mechanical treatment, resulting in a poor formability at room temperature although r-values are high. The relationship between this opposing behavior of r-value with texture and formability in Magnesium alloy is not yet fully understood. This study aims to understand the relationship between r-value and formability in Mg alloy sheets. We systematically analyzed the correlation of r-value with the initial texture, alloying elements, Schmid factors (SF) for each slip system and formability. The study clearly shows that the formability of magnesium alloy sheets can be predicted by r-values, which can be simply measured by uni-axial tensile loading, and it also provides the insights into how to control the alloy composition and texture in order to improve mechanical properties. |
