Abstract Scope |
The world is entering an era of great power conflict, resulting in an imperative need for the Western world to recommence domestic manufacturing, onshoring critical supply chains. Primary magnesium is essential to defense and commercial industries not only as magnesium alloys but as an alloying element in aluminum, desulfurization agent in steel, and reduction agent in other metals such as titanium. Thus, domestic primary production must be restored. However, the world has changed immensely in the past several decades since primary magnesium production was offshored, and the reduction of embodied emissions from production processes is becoming a fundamental manufacturing parameter. Electrolytic technology has always been the preferred method of magnesium production due to its high purity and lower carbon footprint. This presentation will discuss how Magrathea is profoundly advancing this technology to make Western primary magnesium production feasible in our current era by eliminating embodied carbon and minimizing production costs. |
