Abstract Scope |
Understanding the deformation mechanisms of Magnesium (Mg) is critical for comprehending their mechanical properties. This research explores how different stress states from varied nanoindentation tip angles can activate the different deformation mechanisms. By doing nanoindentation experiments using triangular pyramidal indenters with centerline-to-face angles of 34.3°, 65.3°, and 75°, the hardness values as a function of c-axis inclination angles are plotted to investigate the plastic anisotropy in Mg. Moreover, two sets of nanoindentations were performed with 200 and 1000 nm depth indents for elucidating the initial and later stages from the indentation impressions induced by tips of various angles. Microstructural characterization using the TEM revealed the dislocation and twinning activities, which help explain the observed mechanical properties corresponding to different indenter tip angles. |
