Abstract Scope |
Recently, interest in Mg alloys with a long-period stacking order (LPSO) phase has been growing. The LPSO phase exhibit excellent mechanical properties due to kink deformation during hot working. However, since the LPSO phase formed in the Mg-Co-Y alloy transforms into an intermetallic compound at high temperatures, strengthening by kink deformation during hot working cannot be expected. We conducted a study to stabilize the LPSO phase in the high-temperature range by the addition of Zn and Cu into the Mg-Co-Y alloy. The alloys were prepared by casting in a CO2 atmosphere and subsequent heat treatment at 773 K for 100 hours. The microstructure of the prepared Mg-Co-(Zn or Cu)-Y alloy was observed and analyzed by SEM and TEM (HAADF-STEM). It was revealed that the LPSO phase formed in the Mg-Co-Y alloys are stabilized at high temperatures by the addition of small amounts of Zn or Cu. |
