| Abstract Scope |
A low-cost Mg-Al-Mn-Zn (AMZ211) alloy was developed for automotive road wheel applications while the high Mn content leaded to the formation of blocky Mn-containing intermetallic particles. In this study, the effect of cooling rate on the intermetallic formation and solidification behavior of AMZ211, AMZ211-0.4Ca, and AMZ211-0.8 Y alloys were investigated by a wedge casting experiment. Under low cooling rate, coarse β-Mn(Al) particles were formed in AMZ211 and AMZ211-0.4 Ca alloys and coarse Y-contained Al(Mn,Y) particles were formed in AMZ211-0.8 Y alloy. Under high cooling rate, the formed coarse β-Mn(Al) and Al(Mn,Y) were suspended. This study provided a new strategy to suspend the formation of proeutectic blocky intermetallic in Mg alloys by fast cooling. |
