Abstract Scope |
Magnesium (Mg) alloys as a candidate of lightweight materials has been increasingly used in automobile and other industry sectors. However, joining Mg alloys to the steel substructures by conventional fusion welding methods is challenging due to the immiscible nature of the Mg/Fe system. Ultrasonic Spot Welding (USW) as a solid-state joining technique was used in this study. The influence of surface coating and alloy elements on formation of the metallurgical bond and the joint strength was comprehensively evaluated. In addition, welding of component level Mg/steel structures that consist of multiple USW joints was also studied. With the assistance of numerical modeling, a novel approach was developed to produce consistent joint quality as good as that obtained on single-joint coupons. |
