Abstract Scope |
The role of rotation speed on friction self-piercing piercing (F-SPR) joint strength of AA7055-T76 and AA7055-T76 was studied. It is found the lap-shear failure load reached the peak at 3000 rpm. It is due to larger region of solid-state bonding between the steel rivet and AA7055-T76 according to the characterization. Al3Fe IMC with the thickness of 0.4-0.6 µm was observed at the rivet tip of the joint at 3000 rpm while no Al3Fe IMC was formed for the joint of 2000 rpm. The peak temperature during FSP at 3000 rpm was estimated 492 ºC and below 435 ºC at 2000 rpm. The rivet cavity is divided into coarse grain size region and fine grain size region. The dynamic recrystallized (DRXed) grain size for the joint of 2000 rpm is finer due to the higher Zener-Hollomon (Z) value. The hardness profile shows a larger softening region in the joint at 3000 rpm and the softest part of the joint is at the front of the rivet leg in the die. |
