Abstract Scope |
Additive manufacturing is unique to other metallurgical processes not only in its ability to fabricate complex geometries, but in the detailed control of local thermal conditions at the point of deposition. These capabilities have the potential to enable manufacturing of materials with customized control of both geometry and spatial variation of properties. This presentation will discuss research in the area of microstructure control using additive manufacturing processes. Two case studies will be presented. The first is the use of electron beam powder bed fusion systems to locally control the distribution of grain structure and crystallographic texture. The development of computationally efficient modeling tools and unique scan path techniques for controlling thermal conditions will be discussed, including machine learning approach for scan strategy optimization. The second case study will describe the development of highly printable Al alloys for laser powder bed fusion processes as a method for enable local property control through manipulation of process conditions. The design philosophy for Al-Ce alloys, with an emphasis on weldability and exceptional high-temperature properties, will be described, as well as recent results in the control of mechanical properties through variation in process parameters. Implications and opportunities for future alloy and process development will be discussed. |
