Abstract Scope |
Cold spray is an additive manufacturing process in which small solid particles in the range of 5 to 50 microns in diameter are accelerated to supersonic speeds by high pressure and high temperature carrier gas via a convergent-divergent nozzle and then sprayed and bonded onto a substrate surface. It is an emerging technology that deposits materials onto substrate at temperatures well below their melting points. Mechanisms of the solid-state bonding are discussed first, and then emphasis is placed on how to make use of the solid-state bonding to deposit a wide range of materials (including Inconel superalloys and titanium alloys) to obtain coatings with properties unattainable with other techniques such as thermal spay and directed energy deposition. Examples will be given on surface engineering by cold spray to obtain superior tribological properties, great corrosion resistance, or antibacterial and antiviral surfaces. Attention will also be paid to repair and restoration of engineering components with cold spray technology. |
