Abstract Scope |
In this investigation, the stability of WSe2 under heavy ion irradiation is explored, with the goal of determining stability of this two-dimensional material in harsh environments. Two types of samples were investigated: free-standing and substrate-supported WSe2. All samples were exposed to 3 MeV Al ions at room temperature to fluences ranging from 1x1014 - 1x1017 ions/cm2 and characterized using variety of techniques, including but not limited to transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. This study will cover the crystalline-to-amorphous transition, defect structures, and differences in the behavior of free-standing and substrate-supported specimens. The results obtained in this study help determine the stability of this material and provide insight into characteristic behavior of transition metal dichalcogenides, which can be useful for the development of WSe2 devices that will be used in various harsh environments. |
