Abstract Scope |
NITINOL60 is a binary Nickel-Titanium pseudo-shape memory alloy with excellent corrosion resistance, high strain to failure, and can be hardened to ~8GPa. These properties give NITINOL60 the potential to be used in triboelements for space. Lubricants used in space require low vapor pressure, thermal stability, and long life. Dry film lubricants, like MoS2, have low vapor pressures, low operating temperatures, and long life, however, their compatibility with NITINOL60 is not well documented. Friction and wear tests were used to measure the life of MoS2-coated NITINOL60 substrates with and without Titanium interlayers. Scratch tests and TEM measurements were used to characterize the bond strength between the MoS2 coatings and NITINOL60 substrates. These experiments and measurements were repeated for MoS2-coated 440C substrates - a common bearing material for space. It is shown that MoS2-coated NITINOL60 with a Titanium interlayer performs similarly, if not better, than MoS2-coated 440C with a Titanium interlayer. |
