Abstract Scope |
Polymeric biomaterials are of great interest in tissue engineering applications due to their biodegradability and integration with both soft and hard tissues. However, adjusting their degradation rate and mechanical properties are major concerns. In current work, uniform core/shell structures of polycaprolactone (PCL)/ polylacticglycolic acid (PLGA) and PLGA/PCL were fabricated by electrospinning. This was performed by optimizing the electrospinning process for PCL and PLGA in monoaxial system, followed by the coaxial electrospinning of the polymers. Phase analysis and microstructure of the samples were characterized by FTIR and electron microscope. Then, an antibiotic and different trace elements were incorporated in the core/shell structures and the effects of biomolecule, its concentration, and presence of shell on bacteria interaction with samples were studied by zone of inhibition study. Our results show presence of trace elements and antibiotics alter the bacteria behavior and presence of shell has significant role in retarding burst release of molecules. |
