Abstract Scope |
The response of a polycrystalline material to a mechanical load depends not only on the individual grain behavior, but also on the interactions between neighboring grains. The intragranular stress concentrations resulting from these interactions often dominate the initiation of slip events. However, direct in-situ observation of local slip events and stress evolution at the intragranular level inside bulk materials is challenging. Here, we use point-focused high-energy diffraction microscopy (pf-HEDM), a synchrotron technique wherein a point-focused incident beam is used to take local far-field HEDM measurements rastered across a sample. In-situ pf-HEDM is used to track intragranular orientation and stress evolution with sub-grain spatial resolution inside an alpha-titanium sample during tensile loading. An automated algorithm is developed to identify the activated slip systems in each voxel. Statistical analysis and quantitative investigations are performed to gain insights into local initiation and evolution of specific slip systems. |
