Abstract Scope |
Characterizing the slip activity in ordered intermetallics is key to understand their mechanical properties and how they behave in multi-phase alloys. This can be achieved with microcompression or TEM experiments, both requiring expensive equipment time and highly experienced users. Microhardness indentation slip trace analysis on the other hand offers a cheap, easily accessible, and surface level characterization. In this work, the technique’s potential is extended thanks to an automated slip trace detection algorithm, increasing its speed, repeatability and reliability. The technique is then applied to different bcc B2 alloys, successfully differentiating samples slipping in the <100> or ½<111> directions. Finally, the technique is used to measure the evolution of the slip activity in a composition gradient between B2 TiFe (<100> dominant) and B2 Ti2-Fe-Al (½<111> dominant). This experimental approach gives new insights on the control of the slip activity in intermetallics and new grounds for model-based prediction of slip activity. |
