Abstract Scope |
The work investigates the micromechanical properties of low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in single crystal Ni-based (SX) superalloys. In general, SX superalloys are not real single crystals in a strict sense. Typically, they contain LAGBs between slightly misoriented dendrites and this type of defect is referred to as crystal mosaicity. This phenomenon is closely related to deformation occurring during the Bridgman solidification used in the production process. A combination of nanoindentation and a micro cantilever technique is developed to study the micromechanical behaviour of a LAGB. We observe a plastic deformation during bending. The corresponding load-displacement curves reveal load drops associated with formation of a slip bands. The micromechanical data are additionally, validated via more precise characterization, high angular resolution electron back scatter diffraction (RVB-EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results provide an important insight to understanding the role of LAGB’s at low temperature deformation mechanisms in SX-Ni-based superalloys. |
