Abstract Scope |
The effective slip length is a critical feature of Ti alloys which determines a variety of mechanical properties. However, it cannot be simply approximated as the average size of α particles as microtextured regions inherited from processing leads to long range slip localization. An accurate description of slip transfer is thus needed to properly predict the mechanical response. In this study, Heaviside DIC was combined with EBSD to study slip activity in the alpha phase of Ti-6Al-4V. A reliable determination of active slip systems was allowed by the applied procedure. Interactions between slip bands and α/α grain boundaries were analyzed using different metrics and statistically representative microstructural regions. A simple criterion for slip transfer was found to accurately predict experimental observations. This was then used to assess the effective slip length for different microstructures. |
