Abstract Scope |
Through the last decades, the nuclear power industry has been dedicated to advancing fission reactor technology, and it is now embarking on the establishment of the 4th generation of nuclear power reactors. A steady progress in materials technology is essential for this scenario to become a reality, and material breakthroughs enduring the more severe operating conditions imposed by the cutting-edge plant concepts must be engineered. The "Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia" has developed multifunctional nano-ceramic coatings produced by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) for reactors’ in-core components. Preliminary tests validate the material as a prominent piece of technology able to withstand corrosion and radiation damage exposures, but additional experiments are mandatory to corroborate the coating’s mechanical characteristics upon deformation. For this scope, tensile tests under different thermodynamical conditions can be employed. The analysis of the crack morphology induced in the film provides fundamental information about interfacial strength, coating adhesion and fracture toughness. |
