Abstract Scope |
Chemical strengthening of glass is a process that toughens the surface by exchange of ions at temperatures below the Tg where, the replacement of small alkali ions with larger potassium ions occurs, resulting in a thin layer of high compression stress on the surface, tension in the center.
Effective chemical strengthening has restricted by diverse technological limitations (glass composition, impurities, temperature & time). Therefore, the shortcomings of the current technologies have analyzed and EF-IE strengthening alternative has tested for its effectiveness. EF-IE shortens the processing time drastically, improves the efficiency, forming exchanged layer as deep as and in some cases, more than the hours-long conventional strengthening process, and makes the glass more failure resistant.
The obtained values are compared with the state-of-the-art process and show a significant increase in strength at extremely low processing times, 5-10 minutes. Possible reasons for the differences are also discussed. |
