Abstract Scope |
Anisotropy in yield strength has been observed in AM Ti-6Al-4V with respect to the build direction. These differences can be broadly attributed to the differences in microstructure, with wrought material exhibiting an equiaxed microstructure while AM samples are dominated with lamellar structure. The orientation of the alpha (α) lathes and their effect on Taylor hardening on AM materials are playing a crucial role in determining the anisotropy with respect to the build direction. An empirical strengthening model has been adapted to AM processed material. In this model, a relationship between the Schmid factor and the orientation distribution of alpha laths is developed. With this model it is revealed that basal and pyramidal slip systems increase their activities perpendicular to the build direction, contributing to the observed anisotropy. |
