Abstract Scope |
Friction stir welding (FSW), a mature solid-state joining method, has become a revolutionary welding technique over the past two decades because of its energy efficiency, environmental friendliness and high-quality joints. FSW is highly efficient in the joining of Al alloys, Mg alloys, Ti alloys, polymers and other dissimilar materials. Recently, FSW has gained considerable scientific and technological attention in solid state repairing to ensure the structural integrity, safety and service life of the manufactured products due to low heat input, low residual stress, strong material compatibility and so on. Many kinds of solid state repairing methods based on FSW have been proposed, such as filling friction stir welding, repetitive FSW, friction plug welding, friction taper plug welding, etc.The strength coefficients of the solid state repairing joints all reach 80% of the optimum welding joints or BM, indicating the high-quality repairing. According to the characteristics of the defects, the repairing process is mainly composed of defect detection, location, geometrization, and repairing. The highly efficient and high-quality solid state repairing methods are reviewed, which provide technical support and references for the repair of metallic structural parts.Additionally, the challenges and future outlooks are emphasized systematically. |
