Abstract Scope |
In this talk, we will discuss the observation of tungsten rich inclusions found in AM manufactured Inconel 738 through the electron beam melting process using multi-scale characterization and thermo-kinetic modeling. Starting from non-destructive level testing, the inclusions were identified on the fabricated part using X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT). Further, site specific samples were lifted out based on the XCT results to characterize the structure, chemical composition of the inclusions using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Scanning/Transmission Electron Microscopy (S/TEM). The observed microstructure and chemical composition of the inclusions was rationalized using thermo-kinetic modeling of the inclusion formation using TCNI8 and MOBNI4 databases of ThermoCalc and DICTRA. Based on the results, a hypothesis is proposed for the origin of tungsten rich inclusion based on knowledge of the manufacturing processes for Ni-base superalloy powders. |
