Abstract Scope |
Intermetallic phases often exhibit structural order and disorder with different length scales and dimensionality. There is then typically a simple underlying structure principle, which can then be modified with more or less long-range order towards superstructures or polytypes. Identification of such structural features is typically a task for X-ray diffraction, whereas many features are too weak to be utilized when it comes to analysis of Kikuchi diffraction patterns during EBSD analysis. Hence Hough-space methods typically fail to exploit such features so that pseudosymmetry issues cannot be resolved and structurally similar phases may be difficult to be distinguished. To successfully identify order formation and differentiate between various polytypes of the observed phases, a detailed analysis of Kikuchi diffraction patterns or a pattern matching approach is necessary. In this study, we present examples from the binary Cu-Sn and Co-Sn systems to demonstrate successful and unsuccessful attempts at differentiating phases. |
