Abstract Scope Additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) utilizes severe plastic deformation and frictional heat to fabricate metallic deposits at the solid state. To better understand the processing-structure relationship, there is a need to understand the recrystallization and growth of the grains in the AFSD deposit. In this study, the microstructural evolution, including the initial recrystallization mechanism and the further grain growth in the AFSD aluminum alloys, were analyzed from the electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) techniques using the inverse pole figures (IPF), grain reference orientation deviation (GROD), and grain orientation spread (GOS). The misorientation angle of high-angle grain boundaries of the grains in the AFSD deposits was suggested from the GROD maps and the conventional etching method, and compared to the current ASTM standard. EBSD reveals that the AFSD resulted in refined and equiaxed grains in the deposit compared to the feedstock materials.
