Abstract Scope |
Cold spray Cr-coated Zr-alloy is being considered as a near-term accident tolerant fuel cladding material system for pressurized water reactors. In cold spray, a solid-state deposition process, the microstructural features of the feedstock powder are greatly inherited by the final coating. We have performed detailed analysis of Cr powders with different particle sizes, morphologies, and microstructures and correlated them to the corresponding deposited coatings’ characteristics. Additionally, we have performed single particle impact studies of Cr-on-Zr and Cr-on-Cr to understand interfacial adhesion and particle cohesion during the growth of the coating. Resulting coating quality and particle impacts were correlated with deposition parameters and feedstock characteristics to better inform the cold spray deposition process. |
