Abstract Scope |
Single particle impact studies help develop a fundamental understanding of bonding and structure-properties relationships of cold spray. Our recent works take advantage of the Laser-Induced Particle Impact Testing (LIPIT) setup to produce controlled single microparticle impacts and combine it with 3D tomographic observations of the microstructure and the bonding state at the impact site. Using focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), we study multiple aspects of the impact event: bonding at particle-substrate and particle-particle interfaces, as well as deformation at high strain rates and its role in microstructural evolution. Quantitative measurements and mapping of the bonded area provide guidelines for how to optimize processing parameters to produce more uniform cold spray coatings, and microstructural observations reveal limiting conditions for the development of recrystallization. In each case, quantitative data provide opportunities to develop a “unit-process”-level model that captures the most critical physics of an individual impact in cold spray. |
