Abstract Scope |
Cold spray manufacturing has conventionally been limited to metals, alloys, and their composites due to the relative ease of plastic deformation in the feedstock powder particles. Deposition of ceramics falls outside the traditional boundary of cold spray due to the challenges of inducing plastic deformation in these brittle materials, particularly at high strain rates beyond 104 s-1. This study presents insights towards circumventing the challenge of cold sprayability of ceramics. It establishes the role of reducing particle sizes to trigger plastic deformation during cold spray. Ceramic deposits with various particle sizes, melting points, and crystal structures harbor the potential to advance the landscape of cold spraying beyond traditional material boundaries. |
