Abstract Scope |
Alumina (α-Al2O3) as one of the most versatile engineering ceramics, its exceptional mechanical properties were extensively studied over decades. Prior studies show Al2O3 with large grain sizes are brittle. The micromechanical properties of the Al2O3 with fine microstructures are less understood. In this study, spark plasma sintering (SPS) was utilized to sinter the Al2O3 with submicron grain sizes. Meanwhile, the temperature-dependent deformation mechanisms of SPS Al2O3 were investigated by in-situ microcompression tests in SEM microscope up to 740oC. Our in-situ studies show a transition of deformation mechanisms at different temperatures. This study sheds light on a better understanding of the relationship between the defect evolution and mechanical behavior in Al2O3 with fine grains. |
