Abstract Scope |
Nanoindentation tests are moving beyond regular hardness and modulus measurements. This talk will present the development of a novel indentation-based stress relaxation test that can reliably extract the activation parameters for deformation, e.g., activation volumes and strain rate sensitivity exponents, at micrometer length scales. The developed testing protocols, methodology, data analysis framework, and validation results will be presented on nanocrystalline nickel (nc Ni). Nc Ni does not show size effect since hundreds of nanometer-sized grains are interrogated during indentation. The indentation results are systematically compared with uniaxial compression tests on micrometer-sized pillars. Deformation mechanisms in single and nanocrystalline FCC metals will be discussed. Developing the capability to measure the stress relaxation behavior of materials using indentation opens the possibility to investigate thin films and individual grains to systematically study the operative deformation mechanism(s) in a wide range of materials. |
