Abstract Scope |
Newly-emerged concentrated solid-solution alloys (CSAs) have been considered as viable structural materials for new-generation nuclear reactors owing to their unexpected irradiation tolerance. Due to limited volume of the irradiated regions however, intrinsic parametric radiation properties, as well as radiation-modified surface properties of the irradiated CSAs, are less explored in this nascent stage of discovery. The advancement of nanoindentation and its characteristic capability of depth-sensitive detection provides the opportunity to probe surface properties of shallow irradiated layers. In this talk a unique set of single-phase Ni-based CSAs investigated by nanoindentation will be reported. First, surface properties of irradiated samples are carefully examined, and the influence of indentation size effect and pile-up/sink-in effect are considered. Second, the early-stage damage in irradiated samples is quantitatively evaluated through nanoindentation. Finally, potential irradiation hardening mechanisms in the early stage and deformation mechanisms underneath nanoindentation are revealed. |
