Abstract Scope |
Nanolayered structures provide an effective material architecture to gain insight into the size effects in metallic alloys. This study explored a refractory high entropy alloy/metallic glass nanolayered system. Nanolayers of NbMoTaW/CuZr have been produced by magnetron sputtering, where the layer thickness was varied in the range of 5 to 200 nm. NbMoTaW exhibited a fully crystalline BCC structure and CuZr has been fully amorphous irrespective of the layer thickness. The hardness of the nanolayers increased from about 9 GPa to 14 GPa as layer thickness decreased from 200 nm to 5 nm. Decreasing the layer thickness also improved the fracture toughness, as estimated from cube-corner indentation data.
The lack of a predominant size effect in the hardness of metallic glasses suggests that the strengthening is achieved by the confinement of the nanocrystalline HEA to a layered form. The results show the great potential of nanolayered metals for improving mechanical properties. |
