Abstract Scope |
In this study, extensive research has been conducted to examine the nano-scale deformation response and the effect of pre-strain on dislocation nucleation mechanism in a Ni modified Fe-Mn-Al-C steel under homogenized (HMZ) and forged (FG) condition. The maximum shear stress for dislocation nucleation is found to be higher in HMZ specimen in comparison to FG specimen. Further, the activation volume (Ω_v) related to the dislocation nucleation is investigated. The distinct variation in maximum shear stress and activation volume in both the specimens, essentially suggests that the dislocation nucleation mechanism in HMZ specimen is governed by the homogeneous dislocation nucleation. However, the dislocation nucleation in FG specimen is primarily associated with the combination of both homogeneous dislocation nucleation and multiplication of pre-existing dislocations. In addition, molecular dynamic simulation has been employed to gain deeper understanding of the complex dislocation structures beneath the indenter tip in both the specimens. |
