Abstract Scope |
Co-deposited thin films composed of immiscible alloys phase separate during growth. Heterogeneous morphologies have been identified in binary systems composed of Cu and a refractory metal because of large differences in mobilities. Cu agglomerates form within a layered matrix. The strengths of heterogeneous morphologies and multilayers with equivalent layer spacing are comparable. However, the heterogeneous structures have improved ductility because of co-deformation of the soft Cu agglomerates and the hard matrix. Adding additional components to binary systems changes the phase separation kinetics and morphology. Cu-Mo-W forms fcc Cu and bcc Mo-W solid solution phases. The ratio of Mo to W affects the size and distribution of agglomerates and the matrix layer thickness. Nanoindentation of Cu-Mo-W with different sizes and distributions of soft zones and hard zones show how these variables affect hardness. |
