Meeting 2024 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Symposium Incorporating Additive Manufacturing in Material Science and Engineering Education (2024 Student-led Symposium)
Presentation Title Choose your Own Adventure: Additive Manufacturing Knowledge Development through Student-centered Experiential Learning
Author(s) Christopher B. Williams
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Christopher B. Williams
Abstract Scope Participants in the 2016 National Science Foundation Workshop on Additive Manufacturing Education identified the need to prepare the future Additive Manufacturing (AM) workforce with an interdisciplinary skillset spanning materials and processing science, engineering fundamentals, professional skills for problem solving and critical thinking, design practices and tools that leverage the design freedom enabled by AM, and cross-functional teaming techniques. However, providing such breadth and depth is challenging in a traditional classroom setting and at sufficient scale. In this talk, the author presents an approach that combines asynchronous learning modules with hands-on experiential laboratory and project-based activities to provide a flexible curriculum in which students chart their own unique path in AM skills development. Example experiential learning activities from this approach will be presented along with student outcomes and data of their self-reported learning.
