Abstract Scope |
An ongoing challenge in recruitment for MSE departments is students' lack of awareness of MSE as a potential major. This presentation describes a new Introduction to Engineering course aimed at recruiting undeclared freshmen into MSE. The course strongly emphasizes additive manufacturing and sustainable engineering, two topics of significant interest to modern engineering students. Students conduct team-based design-build-test projects involving investment casting of printed PLA patterns and sand casting in printed sand molds while conducting analyses of environmental and societal impact of additive manufacturing in modern industry. By teaching skills useful to nearly all engineers while emphasizing MSE as the foundation of manufacturing, we aim to support the future success of our diverse enrollment while also attracting more students to major in materials science and engineering. |
