Meeting 2024 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Symposium Incorporating Additive Manufacturing in Material Science and Engineering Education (2024 Student-led Symposium)
Presentation Title Advancing Engineering Education through Additive Manufacturing: Empowering Academics with Simulation Software and Teaching Resources
Author(s) Janos Plocher, Navid Manai
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Janos Plocher
Abstract Scope As additive manufacturing (AM) continues to revolutionize the engineering industry, demands for comprehensive knowledge and practical understanding are increasing. The Ansys Academic Team is at the forefront of empowering and facilitating effective teaching, learning and integration of AM concepts into curricula through their innovative support, education resources and simulation capabilities. Herein, the team's collaboration with EuroTeQ, a consortium of esteemed European universities, and their impact on enhancing the educational experience, is highlighted. This was achieved by delivering three recorded tutorials, encapsulating the entire end-to-end AM workflow by encompassing material selection and design for AM (incl. topology optimization), build setup optimization, and process simulation. This equipped students with theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience with Ansys simulation software, fostering a comprehensive understanding of AM processes, which was underscored by overwhelmingly positive feedback by educators and students. The team’s collaborations and proactive approach to disseminating knowledge propels the adoption of AM techniques worldwide.
