Richard Feynman had the words “What I cannot create, I do not understand,” on his blackboard at the time of his death. This is an apt, if opportunistic position from which to begin the argument that if one is to truly understand materials, one must be able to first create them. In this talk, I will argue for just such a case by reflecting on five years of teaching additive manufacturing courses at Arizona State University. During this time, we have been able to take materials science concepts beyond the classroom, and even beyond the laboratory, with its testing of samples of unknown origin, by leveraging a flipped classroom format and access to both manufacturing, and testing and characterization equipment within the same facility, pairing AM processes with materials science techniques. |
