Abstract Scope |
Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) are conceived as a potential game-changing technology for next-generation nuclear power plants. A fundamental knowledge of salt chemistry, including the speciation and solubility of corrosion and fission products is essential for the safe and reliable operation of MSRs. Significant structural heterogeneity in molten salts has been established, particularly in mixtures of salts with different charges, but how this structural heterogeneity affects salt properties such as speciation and solvation dynamics is not well understood, especially for salts containing actinides and lanthanides. In this work, the spatiotemporal heterogeneities of corrosion products Ni(II) and Cr(III) in different molten chloride salts, as functions of temperature and melt composition, are interpreted using optical spectroscopy (UV-Vis-near IR) and X-Ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopy techniques. The changes in chloride salt chemistry and redox potential in presence of fission products, such Eu(III) and I will be presented. |
