Abstract Scope |
Molten salt reactors (MSRs) have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation nuclear power. It is critical to understand the interactions between the proposed molten salts and candidate salt-facing alloys. While fluoride salts have been subject of many studies, relatively less is known about chloride salt – alloy interactions in this context. In this study, several commercial and novel Ni-base superalloys were exposed to molten chloride salts for different periods of time at 750°C in an inert atmosphere. Careful experimental procedures were developed and implemented to reduce oxygen and moisture pickup during test preparation and over the duration of the high temperature exposure test. Test results and key aspects of the microstructural analysis of alloy-salt interactions will be discussed. Insights into alloy design will be presented. |
