Abstract Scope |
Post-irradiation examination of the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE) revealed deposition of fission products on the surface of salt facing structural materials. Certain fission products, such as tellurium, are suspected of causing intergranular cracking in salt facing metals. Additionally, deposition of fuel and fission products in the primary loop represents a materials control and accountancy (MC&A) risk. Samples were exposed to thermally cycled FLiNaK salt with europium fluoride (a fuel surrogate) and representative fission products to study how they deposit on surfaces. This talk will discuss deposition of surrogate fuel and model fission products on stainless steel exposed to static thermally cycled FLiNaK. Future plans for holdup experiments using a forced convection loop and heat exchangers will also be discussed. |
