Abstract Scope |
Electrochemical formation of Tb-Ni alloys was investigated in a molten CsCl-LiCl-TbCl3 system at 973K. After electrodeposition of Tb metal by potentiostatic electrolysis, open-circuit potentiometry were performed using Mo and Ni flag electrodes. A potential plateau was observed at 0.40 V (vs. Li+/Li) with a Mo electrode. The observed potential is interpreted as the Tb3+/Tb equilibrium potential. Six potential plateaus were observed at the Ni electrode, corresponding to the potentials of the two-phase coexistence state of different Tb-Ni alloys. Potentiostatic electrolysis was conducted at 0.42 V for 6 h and 0.57 V for 1 h using Ni plate electrodes, and XRD analysis indicated the formation of TbNi and TbNi2, respectively. After the formation of TbNi2, potentiostatic electrolysis were also conducted at 0.68 V, 0.74 V and 0.94 V for 2 h. The formed TbNi2 was transformed to TbNi3 at 0.68 V, Tb2Ni7 at 0.74 V, TbNi5 at 0.94 V. |
