Abstract Scope |
Molten Salt Reactors (MSR) are leading candidates among the Generation IV advanced nuclear power reactor designs considered for development in the US. Understanding the local structure evolution of metal solutes in molten salts is critical for predicting the stability and reactivity of molten salts for successful deployment of MSRs. In our work, we plan to study the local structure of metal solutes in iodide based molten salt systems as function of temperature and halide type using in-situ X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS). It is an element-specific technique that allows studying the local coordination environment and chemical structure of metal species (Ni) in molten salt systems. In present work, we performed in-situ XAS studies on NiX halides in various LiX-KX eutectic salt systems (where X= Cl, Br and I), complemented by Ultra-Violet spectroscopy studies. The evolution of local structure of Ni2+ as function of temperature and halide type will be discussed. |
