Abstract Scope |
As the corrosion of structural materials is one of the biggest concerns for molten salt reactors, the purification of salt is indispensable for their safety and long-term operation. This study developed a salt-purification system for thermal purification and hydrofluorination and conducted chronoamperometry to reduce impurities in fluoride salt. Salt mixtures were heated in a sequential manner based on dehydration temperatures of individual salt components under the argon flow to remove moisture. Then, the HF gas was injected into the salt with argon gas to reduce other impurities, such as oxides and sulfur. Metallic impurities introduced into the salt during the hydrofluorination were reduced by conducting chronoamperometry. Concentrations of oxygen and hydrogen for salts before and after the purification process were measured using a combustion analysis. In addition, a static corrosion test with stainless steel 316H specimens was conducted to study how the purification of salt could mitigate corrosion. |
