A pyrochemical process was developed to treat contaminated by-products composed of a CaF2 matrix with CaO and Pu inclusions: the objective is to obtain an actinide-free matrix. The main steps of the reprocessing are the matrix fusion by CaCl2 addition and the Pu species reduction in a metallic form by addition of Ca.
The selected approach was to lower the temperature by CaCl2 addition. Binary diagrams were firstly investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction and/or calculated with FactSage®, to build the ternary one.
The second step is the Pu species extraction. Pure CaCl2-CaF2 solvent was firstly characterized but Pu behaviour could not be experimentally investigated in this medium. Instead, a electrochemical study of Pu was performed in molten LiF-CaF2 ą 840°C. A thermodynamic approach was used to assess the Pu(III) reduction potential in CaF2-CaCl2. The expected Pu(III) reduction potential was estimated, as well as the Pu extraction yield. |
