Abstract Scope |
Biodegradable metal materials have made their way to the clinic in multiple medical devices. Currently, magnesium (Mg) materials lead both the cardiovascular and orthopedic biodegradable metal material sectors. Aluminum (Al) is a common alloying addition in commercial and biomedical Mg materials, however pressing questions still remain surrounding Al biocompatibility such as local inflammatory effects and organ accumulation. In this study, we evaluate biomedically relevant Al bearing Mg alloys such as AZ31 and Mg-9Al in the subcutaneous and arterial spaces of C57bl/6 mice. We use multiplexed immunofluorescent labeling as well as high resolution in situ time of flight mass spectrometry in order to elucidate inflammatory reactions and their participation in trafficking Al away from implantation sites. |
