Abstract Scope There is substantial interest in high performance multi-material systems comprising ductile structural alloys and refractory alloys that can withstand the extreme conditions of next-generation aerospace, energy, and defense technologies. However, traditional joining methods for dissimilar materials create sharp interfaces that are detrimental to part performance. Recent work has shown that Directed Energy Deposition (DED) Additive Manufacturing (AM) can be utilized to fabricate compositionally graded structures that mitigate the detrimental effects of sharp interfaces. Significant challenges exist in producing defect-free compositional gradients of alloys with large discrepancies in thermophysical properties. This study employs a process parameter optimization framework for DED to successfully fabricate crack-free, fully-dense compositionally graded Ti-Mo-Ta specimens. Microstructure and mechanical properties of compositionally graded specimens are characterized to elucidate the effects of AM processing on gradient part fabrication and performance. Prepared by LLNL under Contract DE-AC52-07NA27344, supported by Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program under tracking code 23-ERD-034.
