Abstract Scope High performance liquid rocket combustion chambers require complex designs to survive extreme thermal environments. Powder-fed directed energy deposition additive manufacturing presents a viable manufacturing process to produce structures that leverage the thermal properties of GRCop-42 and the high mechanical performance of Inconel 625. Additively grading the materials offers an opportunity to improve interfacial bonding by reducing residual stresses and cracking associated with sharp, binary interfaces from traditional cladding. This study investigates the ideal length scale of the additively-graded interface, examining the interplay of graded composition, microstructure, and properties. Location-specific properties were characterized across varying interface widths through compositional analysis, microstructural observations, and residual stress determination and the results will be discussed. Microstructural characterization will be performed using various techniques such as electron microscopy and EBSD, and localized residual stresses will be evaluated across the graded interface using FIB milling of ring-core specimens to determine the optimal interfacial graded length scale.
